Finding accommodation for students can be both fun and dispiriting. It’s important to the happiness of your student years, and the success of your studies, that you find the right place to live.

Take a look at these tips to ensure that you find a place to call home amongst all the houses for students that are out there.

1.Location, location, location! Before you fall in love and sign the lease on a gorgeous country cottage, consider these questions: will you be able to get to university easily? If you don’t have a car, are you close to public transport and local shops? Many student homes are in urban areas – are you going to feel safe walking home at night?

2.Appearances count. Examine the outside of the student property because it will give you a good idea of how cared-for it is on the inside and should give you an idea of the mindset of the owner and letting agent. Look out for broken tiles, rotten timber and broken guttering. Remember you might have to put up with noise and dust if repairs to any of these things take place while you are living there.

3.Is there a garden? Put your plans for BBQs on hold for a second while you confirm who will be doing the gardening.

4.Look inside. Does everything work as it should – fridge, cooker, and washing machine? Is there central heating? Are there enough bathrooms for the number of people, and will the hot water run out before everyone has showered in the morning?

5.Safety first. It is essential that you ensure the landlord has a current gas safety certificate, that smoke alarms are fitted and work and that there is a secure fire escape. Now, with all these tips under your belt all you need to do is start house-hunting! Contact local letting agents, look in the paper and search the web.
